                                                                                                                                                                        How Does it Work?

From a western medical view, Cosmetic Acupuncture works because the insertion of the needles causes micro-traumas at the skin to which the body may respond by increasing the flow of blood and increasing the production of collagen and elastin to the area in order to heal the perceived wound. From a Traditional Chinese Medicine point of view, Cosmetic Acupuncture improves the circulation of qi and blood through the body, allowing a greater amount of energy and blood to be circulated to the face and neck. This provides nourishment, hydration, toning, and the diminished appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. In addition, the stimulation of collagen production fills out fine lines, and tightens the skin. It also tones targeted muscles of the face which releases facial muscle tension providing firm skin for a healthy, vibrant, and glowing complexion.

Research:

A 1996 study published in the International Journal of Clinical Acupuncture showed that in a clinical trial of 300 cases treated with facial acupuncture, 90% had marked effects with one course of treatment (10 sessions) The effects included improvement of skin elasticity, increase of facial tone, improvement in skin complexion and overall rejuvenation.

What is the course of treatment?

To achieve best results, a biweekly series of 10-15 consecutive Cosmetic Acupuncture treatments are required, however this is modified to the individuals schedule and needs. After completing the course of treatment, maintenance sessions are recommended to prolong results. Follow up sessions may include anywhere from once every month to 4 times a year. Each patient will respond differently to the treatment depending on their age, lifestyle, and motivation. Visible results will be noticeable after 5 -7 sessions. However, you may notice a difference even after the first few sessions. For best results, consistency is very important. With fewer sessions or inconsistent treatments, the results will not be as significant, or as long lasting. Sessions will include a full health history intake, the insertion of body needles, and facial massage followed by the insertion of facial needles.

Are there any cautions or contraindications?

Cosmetic acupuncture is contraindicated for those individuals who have heart disorders, uncontrolled hypertension, diabetes mellitus, some pituitary disorders, seizure disorders, and those who have bleeding or bruising problems. In addition, the needling is so superficial, just at the level of the dermis, that risks and side effects are very low. However, occasional mild bruising may occur.
